What AI actually does inside business software

Skip the hype: the practical jobs where AI earns its place in your workflows today.

In business software, AI is most useful when it does a narrow job well inside a process you already understand, rather than acting as a general assistant bolted on the side.

Reading is the clearest win. Extracting fields from invoices, emails and contracts turns unstructured documents into data your systems can use. Classifying is the next: routing a support ticket, flagging an unusual transaction, or tagging a lead by intent.

Drafting works too, as long as a person reviews the result. A suggested reply, a summary of a long thread, a first pass at a report: the human stays accountable and saves the blank-page time.

What it shouldn't do is act unchecked on anything that moves money or changes records. Keep a human approval step where the stakes are real, log what the model decided, and review those logs often. That's what makes it trustworthy enough to scale.
